Feeling Judged at the Gym? What a Safe Space to Train Actually Feels Like
"I'd love to start exercising. I just can't face the gym."
If you've ever said this, or thought it while walking past a gym window, you're not alone. It's one of the things women tell us most often when they first get in touch.
Maybe it's the mirrors. The busy weights area. The feeling that everyone is watching and knows exactly what they're doing, except you. Maybe something happened in a gym before that has stayed with you.
Feeling uncomfortable in a gym is not a sign that exercise isn't for you.
It's usually a sign that the space wasn't made for you.
Why so many gyms feel this way
For years the fitness industry has been built around one message: push harder, burn more, change how you look. Before and after photos. Calories flashing on the machines. "No pain, no gain."
When that's the message on every wall, it's no wonder so many of us walk in feeling like we're already behind.
A small study published in October 2026 asked women in eating disorder recovery what helped and what got in the way for them in gyms. What got in the way was talk of appearance, weight loss, calorie burning and pushing through pain. What helped was exercise framed around movement, fun, building confidence and honouring your limits (International Journal of Eating Disorders).
It's one study, but it echoes what so many women tell us.
Feeling judged is your nervous system doing its job
When you walk into a space that feels unfamiliar or unsafe, your nervous system notices. Your heart beats a little faster. Your shoulders creep up. You want to make yourself smaller, or leave.
That's not you being dramatic. It's your body trying to protect you.
And when your nervous system is on alert, it's very hard to learn a new movement, enjoy it, or want to come back. That's why at AW safety comes first. Not as an extra, but as the foundation everything else is built on.
What a safe space to train actually feels like
So what should you look for? These are the things we've built AW around:
Small numbers. Our classes have just 6 to 7 women, so you're never lost at the back of a crowded room.
Permission to touch. No adjustments unless you say it's ok.
Choice, always. The weight is always your call. Every movement has options to make it easier or harder, and you can say no to anything that doesn't feel right.
A focus on what your body can do. Lifting a little heavier, feeling steadier on the stairs, sleeping better.
Coaches who notice. Our coaches are trauma informed. They notice when you're overwhelmed, offer suggestions and slow things down, rather than telling you to push through.
Rest that counts. We finish every session with slow breathing and a quiet minute, so your body knows it's safe.
You don't have to do it all at once
A UK study from September 2026 of women going through perimenopause and menopause found that anxiety about public exercise spaces was one of the things holding them back, along with always putting everyone else first. Its advice: non judgemental spaces and small, gradual steps (Menopause journal).
Small steps is exactly how we like to start.
If a class feels like too much right now, personal training gives you a private space to learn the basics, ask questions and build trust with one coach who gets to know your body, your history and your goals. When you're ready, you bring that confidence into a small class. PT is where you build your foundation, and classes are where you practise it with community.
You still show up. You just show up somewhere that feels safe.
