Is Personal Training Harder Than Classes? Why 1:1 Is Often the Gentlest Place to Start

One of the most common things we hear from women who are new to exercise is this: "I'm not ready for PT yet. I'll start with classes and work my way up."

It makes sense on the surface. Personal training sounds serious. You picture a coach standing over you, counting reps, pushing you until you're out of breath and aching. Classes feel safer because you can blend in at the back.

For beginners, it's actually the other way around. 1:1 does not mean more intense. It means more tailored. And tailored is exactly what a beginner needs.

Where the myth comes from

For years the fitness industry has sold personal training through the loudest possible image: shouting, sweating, "no pain, no gain". Reality TV and social media made it look like punishment you pay for.

So it is no surprise that many women assume PT is for people who are already fit, already confident, and ready to be pushed. That belief keeps a lot of beginners away from the very thing that would help them most.

What a class can feel like when you are new

Classes are brilliant. We love ours. But when you are brand new, a class asks a lot of you at once.

  • The pace is set for the room, not for you.

  • You are learning new movements while trying to keep up.

  • It is easy to compare yourself to the person next to you.

  • If something feels wrong, you might not want to stop and say so in front of others.

We try our best to mitigate each of these as much as we can in a class setting by keeping our classes really small, with only 6 to 7 women per class. This allows the coach to give enough individual attention and support to each person, so that modifications can be offered.

For many women, especially those coming back after a long break, after having a baby, or after a hard experience in a gym, that can feel overwhelming. When your nervous system is on alert, it is very hard to learn, enjoy it, or come back.

Why 1:1 is gentler, not harder

In a personal training session, the whole session is built around you.

  • You set the pace. Your coach watches how your body and your breath respond and adjusts in the moment.

  • You learn the basics properly. Squats, hinges, pushing and pulling are taught step by step, so you build confidence as well as strength.

  • You can say how you feel. Tired, sore, anxious, low energy after a bad night's sleep. Your session changes to meet you where you are that day.

  • There is no one to compare yourself to. It is just you and a coach who is on your side.

Intensity is a dial, not a default. A good coach turns it up slowly, only when you are ready, and turns it down when that's what you really need. A holistic coach knows how to differentiate between the two. That is the opposite of what most people imagine PT to be.

How we coach at AW Wellness Studios

We are a women only, trauma informed studio in Tottenham. Our coaches are trained to notice the signs of a stressed nervous system and to build safety first. We work from the inside out, which means strength, yes, but also self trust, softness and acceptance.

That is why so many of the 450+ women we have coached since 2020 started with 1:1. They wanted to feel safe, understood and in control before joining a class. Many of them now do both.

That is what coaching at AW really looks like, whether 1:1 or in a small class. It's not about being pushed harder. It's about being seen.

So which is right for you?

Personal training may suit you best if:

  • you are new to exercise or returning after a long break

  • you feel nervous or self conscious in gym spaces

  • you have a specific goal, injury history, or life stage to work around

  • you want to learn to move with confidence before joining a group

Classes may suit you best if:

  • you already feel comfortable with the basic movements

  • you enjoy the energy of a group

  • you want regular movement at a lower cost

  • you don't have a specific goal you're trying to achieve

There is no wrong answer, and you do not have to earn your way into PT. It is not the advanced option. For a lot of women, it is the kindest first step.
