Why You Keep Stopping and Starting (And Why It's Not a Willpower Problem)

If you've ever started a new routine full of motivation, only to find yourself back at square one months later, you're not alone. It's one of the most common things women tell us at their first consultation: "I'm good for a while, then life happens and I stop."

Most of us have been taught to see this as a personal failing. We tell ourselves we're lazy, we lack discipline, we just need to want it more. So we start again next Monday, next month, next year, a little harder on ourselves each time.

Here's the truth: stopping and starting is not a willpower problem.

It's usually a support problem.

The workout is only a small part of the picture

When a routine falls apart, it's rarely because the exercises were "wrong". It's because of everything around them. A stressful week at work. Poor sleep. A child who's unwell. A comment about your body that sits with you for weeks. Feeling unsure what you're doing once you're actually in the gym.

Most fitness plans ignore all of this. They hand you a programme and assume the rest of your life will politely stay out of the way. When it doesn't, the plan breaks, and you blame yourself.

That's why at AW we take a holistic, trauma-informed approach. We look at the habits, emotions and life stuff behind your goals, not just the reps, so that you can continue moving even when life is throwing it all at you.

Why "all or nothing" keeps you stuck

A lot of women we coach have an all-or-nothing relationship with exercise. Either they're training five times a week and eating perfectly, or they're doing nothing at all. There's no middle ground.

The problem is that "all" isn't sustainable for most real lives. So the moment something gets in the way, it tips straight into "nothing".

Consistency doesn't come from doing more. It comes from building something that still works on your hardest weeks. That might mean a shorter session, a lighter week, or simply showing up and moving gently. Showing up exactly as you are counts.

What actually helps you stay consistent

In our experience, these are the things that make the biggest difference:

  • Someone expecting you. When you have the same coach, on the same day and time each week, training stops being something you have to find time for. It's already in your diary.

  • A plan that adapts to you. Your programme should change when your week does. If you're exhausted, your coach adjusts the session there and then, rather than pushing through a plan that doesn't fit. You still show up, you still do something.

  • Understanding why you stop. Your coach helps you notice the patterns: what tends to knock you off track, and what you can put in place before it happens. What are the common conversations looping in your head that are keeping you stuck?

  • Pointing out the small wins you forget. Lifting a little heavier, feeling stronger on the stairs, sleeping better. These are the things that keep you coming back.

Why we start with a conversation

Every personal training journey at AW starts with a free consultation with Alma, our founder. It's relaxed, private and at your pace. We'll talk about your routine, your stress, any injuries and what's made it hard to stay consistent before.

This isn't a sales pitch. It's how we make sure the support we offer fits your real life, so this time feels different.

In our members' words

"I don't recognise myself as someone who has spent all her teenage and adult life trying to shrink herself... This is the first time in my adult life that I've consistently shown up to exercise classes, and that has everything to do with the space and the wonderful and experienced trainers."

"When I joined I thought it would be just for a few months to regain some fitness and confidence. Here I am 3 years later lifting weights that I would never have thought I could."

You haven't failed. You just haven't had the right support yet.

If you're tired of starting again every Monday, it might be time to try something different. Not a stricter plan, but a kinder, more supportive one, in a women-only studio where you can show up as you are.

Book your free consultation and let's talk about what would make this time stick.
